چکیده

We investigate the anisotropy of the optical properties of thin Fe films on GaAs(001) from first-principles calculations. Both intrinsic and magnetization-induced anisotropy are covered by studying the system in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and external magnetic fields. We use the linearized augmented plane wave method, as implemented in the WIEN2K density functional theory code, to show that the C2v symmetric anisotropy of the spin-orbit coupling fields at the Fe/GaAs(001) interface manifests itself in the corresponding anisotropy of the optical conductivity and the polar magneto-optical Kerr effect. While their magnetization-induced anisotropy is negligible, the intrinsic anisotropy of the optical properties is significant and reflects the underlying C2v symmetry of the Fe/GaAs(001) interface. This suggests that the effects of anisotropic spin-orbit coupling fields in experimentally relevant Fe/GaAs(001) slabs can be studied by purely optical means.

Reversal of spin polarization in Fe/GaAs (001) driven by resonant surface states: first-principles calculations.

A minority-spin resonant state at the Fe/GaAs(001) interface is predicted to reverse the spin polarization with the voltage bias of electrons transmitted across this interface. Using a Green's function approach within the local spin-density approximation, we calculate the spin-dependent current in a Fe/GaAs/Cu tunnel junction as a function of the applied bias voltage. We find a change in sign o...

Influence of GaAs(001) substrate misorientation towards ˆ111‰ on the optical properties of InxGa12xAs/GaAs

Local variations in the optical properties of thick In0.13Ga0.87As films grown on GaAs~001! substrates misoriented toward $111% planes have been studied with polarized and spectrally-resolved cathodoluminescence ~CL! imaging. The degree of anisotropic relaxation and density of dark line defects ~DLDs! in CL was found to depend on the choice of the substrate miscut orientation. An enhanced aniso...

Anisotropic Polar Magneto-Optic Kerr Effect of Ultrathin Fe/GaAs(001) Layers due to Interfacial Spin-Orbit Interaction.

We report the observation of the anisotropic polar magneto-optical Kerr effect in thin layers of epitaxial Fe/GaAs(001) at room temperature. A clear twofold symmetry of the Kerr rotation angle depending on the orientation of the linear polarization of the probing laser beam with respect to the crystallographic directions of the sample is detected for ultrathin magnetic films saturated out of th...

Magnetic control of spin-orbit fields: a first-principles study of Fe/GaAs junctions.

The microscopic structure of spin-orbit fields for the technologically important Fe/GaAs interface is uncovered from first principles. A symmetry based method allows us to obtain the spin-orbit fields-both their magnitude and orientation-for a generic Bloch state, from the electronic band structure for any in-plane magnetization orientation. It is demonstrated that the spin-orbit fields depend ...

Dynamics of the MnAs α/β-Striped Microstructure and of the Fe Magnetization Reversal in Fe/MnAs/GaAs(001): An Optical-Laser Pump–Free-Electron-Laser Probe Scattering Experiment

It was shown recently that the Fe magnetization reversal in the Fe/MnAs/GaAs(001) epitaxial system, attained by temperature control of the regular stripe pattern of the MnAs αand β-phases, can also be driven by an ultrashort optical laser pulse. In the present time-resolved scattering experiment, we address the dynamics of the MnAs α-β self-organized stripe pattern induced by a 100 fs optical l...
